Sea Ice Forecast for Western and Arctic Alaskan Coastal Waters

ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...High.

SYNOPSIS...A very strong low pressure develops in the Bering Sea
Saturday, the extratropical incarnation of Typhoon Halong, peaking
in intensity Sunday morning before slowly weakening as it move into
the Beaufort Sea on Monday morning. Two weaker areas of low pressure
are left Monday through Wednesday over the far western high arctic
and Canadian Archipelago.

PKZ813-Point Franklin to Cape Halkett out to 15 nm-
PKZ814-Cape Halkett to Flaxman Island out to 15 nm-
PKZ815-Flaxman Island to Demarcation Point out to 15 nm-
PKZ859-Point Franklin to Cape Halkett from 45 to 140 nm-
PKZ860-Cape Halkett to Flaxman Island from 45 to 60 nm-
PKZ861-Flaxman Island to Demarcation Point from 20 to 45 nm-

The main ice edge in the Beaufort Sea extends from 72 22N 154 54W
to 70 16N 141 34W and continues east into Canadian waters. The ice
edge is open water.

From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge in the Beaufort
Sea extends from 73 nm north of Ikiak to 35 nm north of Demarcation
Point and continues east into Canadian waters. The ice edge is open
water.

FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is moderate. Most of the developed ice along the North
Slope coast has melted in warmer air and southerly winds. The
prevailing storm track of Bering Sea to Beaufort Sea will mostly
pause growing conditions through Wednesday. The ice edge itself will
go through several periods of retreat and advance as two low
pressure systems traverse the area. Expect a southeast advance of 10-
20 nm through the weekend in light northwesterly winds.

Late Sunday into Monday, the weakening ex-Halong will bring a short
period of retreat of 10-20 nm, followed by a brief advance of 5-10
nm on Tuesday.

The main ice edge in the Chukchi Sea extends from 72 22N 154 54W
to 73 22N 168 43W and continues west into Russian waters. The ice
edge is open water.

From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge in the Chukchi
Sea extends from 73 nm north of Ikiak to 225 nm northwest of Point
Franklin and continues west into Russian waters. The ice edge is
open water.

FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is moderate. Over the main ice pack, cold air and light
westerly winds will bring a period of advance and growth through
early Sunday. On Sunday, the weakening ex-Halong will traverse the
northwest Alaska coast, advancing the ice edge 20-30 nm to the south
Sunday and Monday. Behind the system, light to moderate
southwesterlies develop which will retreat the ice edge through
Wednesday 10 to 20 nm.
