Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Aberdeen SD
415 AM CDT Thu Sep 19 2024

.DISCUSSION...

Windy conditions will return today as the pressure gradient
tightens. West to southwest breezes will gust to between 35 to 45
mph, especially west of the James Valley. Strongest gusts should
materialize across north central South Dakota where speeds may reach
45 to 50 mph in some isolated spots. Thankfully, cooler temperatures
will also be moving in so this will temper some fire weather
concerns. Minimum relative humidity values are anticipated to fall
to between 25-30 percent, mainly for areas west of the Missouri
River. Winds will diminish tonight with cooler temperatures
prevailing. A warmer than normal day is expected Friday with
elevated fire weather conditions returning to parts of central South
Dakota with minimum relative humidity values falling to between 20-
25 percent West River.

...VERY HIGH FIRE DANGER...

Very poor weather conditions and very low moisture content of
grasses, and other dry organic material on the ground,
indicate that dangerous burning conditions exist. Fires will
spread rapidly and show erratic behavior. Outdoor burning is
not recommended.

The outlook for Friday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the moderate to high category.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

Marginal weather conditions or lowering moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there is
some potential for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be
closely monitored.

The outlook for Friday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low to moderate category.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the
probability of a fast moving fire is low. Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.

The outlook for Friday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low category.
