Rangeland Fire Danger Statement
National Weather Service Aberdeen SD
324 PM CDT Sat Sep 28 2024

.DISCUSSION...

Above normal temperatures in the 80s and 90s will continue Sunday,
along with dry conditions. Across central and north central South
Dakota, southerly winds will pick up as the day progresses,
eventually gusting to between 30 and 45 mph west of the James River,
with the highest speeds forecast across north central South Dakota.
Humidity will become quite low as well, likely dropping to between
10 and 20 percent throughout and west of the Missouri River valley,
where critical fire weather conditions are expected to develop.

A strong cold front will sweep through the region late Sunday night
through Monday morning, switching winds around to the northwest.
Sustained winds could spend some time around 25 to 30 mph Monday
morning, and gusts could exceed 45 mph, particularly across portions
of central and north central South Dakota. It will be cooler on
Monday, but still plenty dry. Relative humidity values are expected
to fall into a range from 15 to 30 percent on Monday. Another day of
near critical fire weather conditions.

...MODERATE FIRE DANGER...

Marginal weather conditions or lowering moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that there is
some potential for a fire to spread. Any outdoor burning should be
closely monitored.

The outlook for Sunday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the high to extreme category.

...LOW FIRE DANGER...

Favorable weather conditions or a high moisture content of grasses,
and other dry organic material on the ground, indicate that the
probability of a fast moving fire is low. Outdoor burning under
these conditions can usually be performed with reasonable safety
precautions, but should be monitored.

The outlook for Sunday afternoon...The grassland fire danger index
will reach the low to very high category.
