Strong and very dry south to southwesterly winds are bringing critical fire weather conditions into the middle Rio Grande Valley this afternoon, expanding across west-central NM Saturday afternoon. Southwesterly winds strengthen across the area Sunday with max gusts of 40 to 60 mph by the afternoon resulting in the threat of critical fire weather expanding across the western two-thirds of the state and perhaps to the TX border as well. Dry southwesterly flow persists through Monday areawide. Meanwhile, a backdoor cold front has brought cooler air and higher moisture to northeastern NM with warmer and higher moisture pushing into east-central NM. This has shunted the fire weather threat in this part of the state today and again Saturday afternoon. The frontal boundary will surge westward through the gaps of the central mountain chain bringing a strong east-canyon wind to Albuquerque tonight and only a brief good humidity recovery to the middle Rio Grande Valley Saturday morning. This low-level moisture gets mixed out quickly Saturday, and gets pushed back to TX Sunday allowing for the aforementioned expansion of fire weather conditions. ................................................................
