Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
413 AM PDT Sun Jul 7 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Temperatures will continue to climb going into the
weekend and start of next week as numerous climate sites face high
probabilities of breaking daily as well as all-time temperature
records. Oppressive heat is expected to continue through at least
midweek.
&&

.DISCUSSION...Today through Saturday.

Yesterday, 6 locations experienced record heat, with daily maximum
temperatures broken or tied in Las Vegas, Desert Rock, Bishop, Death
Valley, Barstow-Daggett, and Kingman. Daily records will continue to
fall through the remainder of the weekend and start of next week
along with the potential for a few climate sites to approach - and
even reach - their all-time records. As mentioned in the previous
discussion, very dry conditions will continue to allow overnight
temperatures to cool enough to prevent many warm low records, though
a few remain in jeopardy. Details can be found in the CLIMATE
section below.

All locations in our forecast area have a heat-related headline,
with Heat Advisories in place for the eastern Sierra slopes [Inyo],
White Mountains [Inyo], Sheep Range [Clark], and Spring Mountains
[Clark] and Excessive Heat Warnings in place for the remainder of
the area. In coordination with neighboring offices, all heat
headlines have been extended to include Thursday. HeatRisk is on a
scale from 0 to 4 and highlights heat as it pertains to impacts to
people and infrastructure. The entire region will range from Major
(Level 3) to Extreme (Level 4) through at least Thursday. When the
body is unable to cool down properly, it wears down and eventually
struggles to protect itself from the heat. For this reason, heat
impacts will continue to worsen as we move through this heat wave.
We encourage you to check up on loved ones - especially those who
are particularly vulnerable to the heat. Populations sensitive to
heat may include, but are not limited to: those experiencing
homelessness, elderly people, pregnant people, children, and pets.
Never leave a child or a pet in a car without air conditioning. With
this level of heat, simply rolling down the windows will not be
sufficient. Additionally, be careful of pavement burns. It`s best to
walk your dogs in the early morning hours or after sunset when the
pavement is coolest.

Uncertainty continues regarding the timing and the amount of
monsoonal moisture to move northward into our forecast area.
Ensemble means indicate that the strong area of high pressure
overhead will slowly meander eastward toward the Four Corners mid-to-
late week, which will set up a favorable flow for moisture to surge
up the Colorado River Valley. Slight chances of precipitation exist
across northwestern Arizona, far southern Nevada, and southeastern
California next weekend.

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...Variable winds with speeds less than 7
knots expected for much of the morning and early afternoon period.
There are indications that a push of northwest (300-330 degrees)
winds will develop after 21z with speeds around 7-9 knots and
potential gusts up to 12 knots. Winds are then forecast to shift
more west to northwest (260-300 degrees) after 03z with speeds
around 8 knots. Temperatures are expected to be at or above 100
degrees from 16z through 06z and peak around 117 degrees from 21z to
02z.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...All TAF sites are expected to remain under 10 knots
through the afternoon and early evening with the exception of KDAG
where a push of westerly winds up to 20 knots are expected after 01z
this evening. There will also be some gusty northwest winds
affecting potions of Lincoln and northern Mohave County this
afternoon with gusts to around 20 knots. Very hot temperatures again
today with most areas seeing highs between 110 and 120 degrees.
Death Valley will top out between 125 and 130 degrees.
