700 FXUS65 KVEF 082127 AFDVEF Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Las Vegas NV 227 PM PDT Tue Jul 8 2025 .KEY MESSAGES... * Dry conditions and strong winds will result in critical fire weather conditions across portions of southern Nevada for the remainder of this afternoon and tomorrow. * Temperatures across the region will continue to increase each day through mid-week as high pressure builds over the area. An Extreme Heat Warning is in effect for southern Mohave County and the Colorado River Valley on Wednesday as temperatures peak in the eastern portions of our forecast area. && .DISCUSSION...through this weekend. The combination of dry fuels, low humidity, and breezy southerly- to-southwesterly winds will result in critical fire weather conditions across portions of southern Nevada today and tomorrow. A Red Flag Warning is in effect for Nye and Esmeralda counties which will expire at 8pm this evening. The Fire Weather Watch that was in effect for portions of Lincoln County Wednesday has been upgraded to a Red Flag Warning that will run from 10 am to 8 pm tomorrow. For more details, see the FIRE WEATHER section below. Temperatures will continue to increase as a high pressure ridge builds over the area. By tomorrow, southern Mohave County and the Colorado River Valley will see widespread Major (Level 3 of 4) HeatRisk where an Extreme Heat Warning remains in place. A shortwave trough will swing through the Great Basin on Wednesday, which will result in temperatures cooling a slightly from Wednesday to Thursday. In response to the shortwave moving though to our north, we will see the ridge axis shift over the western half of our forecast area on Thursday. This will allow for temperatures across our western zones to increase as we head into the weekend. Meanwhile, our far southeastern zones will see temperatures "cool" back down to near normal as we head into the weekend before heating back up as we head into next week. && .AVIATION...For Harry Reid...For the 00Z Forecast Package... Southwest winds with gusts 18-22KT are expected through the remainder of the afternoon and early evening before diminishing. VFR conditions will prevail with passing mid and high clouds this afternoon and tonight, and temperatures expected to remain above 100F through 04z and peaking at 107 around 01Z. Similar wind conditions Wednesday with afternoon southwest gusts 18-22KT. Temperatures will once again climb above 100F between 17Z and 05Z and peak around 110F between 00Z-01Z. For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast California...For the 00Z Forecast Package...Southwest winds with gusts to 15-25KT expected for most areas into this evening before diminishing. Winds will remain generally light over the western Mojave Desert, but expect to see westerly winds increase after 00Z with gusts to around 20KT. Gusts will not be as prevalent across the Lower Colorado River Valley, though intermittent gusts to 10-15KT are possible into this evening. VFR conditions will prevail with mid and high clouds this afternoon onward. && .FIRE WEATHER...A Red Flag Warning remains in place until 8pm this evening for Esmeralda and central Nye counties where southwest winds between 15-25 mph with gusts between 30-35 mph expected. Winds will then diminish to below criteria through the overnight period. The area of low pressure off the CA coast responsible for the gusty winds today will shift east tonight. This will cause the belt of gusty southwest winds to shift east Wednesday and more into portions of Lincoln County. The Fire Weather Watch for Lincoln County has been upgraded to a Red Flag Warning which will run from 10am to 8pm for Fire Weather Zone 461. Sustained winds 20-25 mph along with gusts to around 35 mph combined with single digit humidity will lead to critical fire weather conditions. Recreation with sparks and outdoor burning is not recommended as any fires that start will develop and spread quickly. && .SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...Spotters are encouraged to report any significant weather or impacts according to standard operating procedures. && $$ DISCUSSION...Gorelow For more forecast information...see us on our webpage: https://weather.gov/lasvegas or follow us on Facebook and Twitter
