Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pocatello ID
236 AM MDT Sun Jul 7 2024

.SHORT TERM...Today through Mon night. After the dry cold front
yesterday, temperatures will be slightly cooler. There will be a
wind shift to the north and northwest. While it is a weaker wind,
the north wind on the American Falls Reservoir produces hazardous
conditions mainly on the southwest end of this body of water.
Wind is slow to return to southwest flow for Mon, but the heating
returns with 3 to 5 deg F of warming for the towns and cities from
Sun to Mon. Messick

.LONG TERM...Tuesday through Sunday.
The long term period will feature hot and dry conditions with low
elevation high temperatures will be around 100 degrees Wednesday
through Saturday. But generally highs in the 80s and lower 90s in
the mountains and mid to upper 90s and even above triple digits
throughout the period. An upper level ridge will make slow progress
east and be overhead by Wednesday. Not expecting precipitation
through Saturday but some models indicate the possibility of
monsoonal moisture making it into southeast Idaho by next Sunday
as flow aloft turns more southwesterly allowing a path for the
moisture to move north and have very minimal chances of showers in
the Upper Snake Highlands. Not expecting significant winds under the
ridge but will have some diurnal increases into the 10 to 15 mph
range in the afternoons.

.AVIATION...
Will have a continuation of the clear skies once again today. Have
had a turn of the wind flow behind the frontal system that moves
through yesterday and winds at IDA, PIH and BYI will be down valley
and out of the northeast through the day. Generally around 10 knot
speeds expected.

.FIRE WEATHER...In the cool air mass behind the dry cold front of
Sat has allowed for improved recovery and more limited areas where
the afternoon humidity drops below 15 percent for today. But the 3
to 5 deg F warm up from Sun highs to Mon highs will return very
dry afternoon humidity readings all over the lower elevations on
the western half of the Fire Weather AoR. However wind is
remaining light under the upper level ridge that returns to
dominate the weather pattern for the next 8 days. Temperatures on
Wed and Thu of this upcoming week will be very hot with widespread
humidity below 11 percent. Messick
