AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION
National Weather Service Eureka CA
304 PM PDT Wed Jul 17 2024

.SYNOPSIS...Quiet, dry, and climatologically normal weather is
forecast to continue through the work week. Interior temperatures
creep back up into the triple digits this weekend. There is a
slight chance for thunderstorms Saturday in Trinity county.

&&

.DISCUSSION...The shortwave has pushed out of the area and left
cool and dry air in it`s wake. This has weakened the marine
inversion and allowed clouds to clear out this afternoon up and
down the coast. Inland areas are warming into the 80s to near 90.
Winds at some the interior areas of Humboldt and Del Norte
counties have switched to the northwest this afternoon.

Thursday and Friday high pressure remains just of the east of the
region. Flow aloft will be south to southwest while flow at the
surface will be out of the north to northwest. Temperatures start
warming on Thursday with additional warming on Friday as high
pressure strengthens over the area. This stronger high pressure is
expected to shrink the marine layer and limit clouds to closer to
the coast.

Friday night some of the models start to show an upper level low
off the southern CA coast start to move north. Some of the
clusters show increased moisture with this feature and the GFS has
a fairly strong shortwave off the coast. So have added the
potential for thunderstorms over Trinity county Saturday
afternoon. It is possible these storms could occur Saturday night
or on Sunday, the timing and locations are still uncertain.

Monday and into the middle of next high pressure continues to
build over the area. Highs from 100 to 108 are possible in the
interior valleys. This brings an elevated heat risk and an
advisory or warning may be needed. MKK

.AVIATION...The coastal TAF sites experienced a positive marine layer
influence today; the catalyst was a notable mid-layer disturbance
that lifted the stratus form IFR to MVFR. Before noonday, clouds had
mostly dissipated from Humboldt Bay-Arcata-Klamath but were more
stubborn at Crescent City until 1:00 PM. Aviation over Northeast
Humboldt, and western Trinity was possibly impacted by wildfire
smoke near Willow Creek; other inland areas were SKC. On Thursday,
the marine layer is expected to become more compressed...resulting
in lower Cig/Vis at the coast IAW with some model guidances and a
little history. CEC and ACV expected to drop to IFR (300-600 feet)
overnight. /TA

&&

.MARINE...Light southerly winds will begin to turn northerly this
evening into Thursday. Winds will broadly increase, especially
especially south of Cape Mendocino. Winds there could see gusts up
to 25-30 knots. Steep seas of around 6-7 ft at 6 seconds will be
found south of the Cape through the end of the week. Late this
weekend, winds and seas ramp up further with near-gale force winds
possible south of the Cape with steep to hazardous seas across the
waters. JB
