824 FXUS65 KBOI 020245 AFDBOI Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Boise ID 845 PM MDT Mon Jul 1 2024 .DISCUSSION...Showers and thunderstorms have pushed into eastern Idaho this evening following the passage of an upper trough axis. Earlier shower/storm activity brought localized gusts of 45-60 mph across open terrain south of the Snake River and higher mtns in w-central Idaho. Generally breezy winds will continue across the region through sunset, then quieting overnight. The current forecast for tonight is on track. && .AVIATION...Generally VFR. High density altitude will become a factor by the weekend into much of next week. Surface winds: variable less than 10 kt overnight becoming N-NW 5-15 kt with gusts to 20 kt. Winds aloft at 10kft MSL: W-NW 15-25 kt. KBOI...VFR with passing mid level clouds. Surface winds SW-W less than 4 kt overnight, becoming NW 7-11 kt by Tues./16Z. && .PREV DISCUSSION... SHORT TERM...Tonight through Wednesday night...A short wave trough moving through the area is already helping to initiate showers and thunderstorms. Additional storms are expected to develop and move east through the early evening hours. Wind gusts to 40 mph and small hail are possible with the stronger storms. After this evening, the remainder of the short term period will be dry. Temperatures will stay a few degrees below normal Tue and Wed. Breezy northwest winds will occur Wed aft/eve south and east of Boise, with gusts 25 to 35 mph. LONG TERM...Thursday through Monday...High pressure will dominate the weather pattern through the extended period. A prolonged period of warming and drying is anticipated with a probability of 30-50% of temperatures exceeding 105 degrees Saturday into next week for lower valley locations. Overnight temps this weekend are anticipated to drop into the upper 60s during this period as well, adding to the potential for a stretch of dangerous heat.
