In 1985, a Delta Airlines Tri Star, while on final
approach into Dallas Fort Worth Airport, crashed when it
encountered a severe thunderstorm induced micro burst.
The crash killed 128 passengers and 8 crew members. The
tragedy played a vital role in the decision to install
wind shear detectors at many airports across the country.
In 1954, severe thunderstorms reportedly pummeled parts
of North Central Kansas with golfball sized hail for
around 30 minutes. One hail drift reportedly measured
200 feet long, 70 feet wide, and 3 feet deep. No further
details were provided.
