Sea Ice Forecast for Western and Arctic Alaskan Coastal Waters

ANALYSIS CONFIDENCE...High.

SYNOPSIS...A low moves into the Chukchi Sea on Tuesday, then into
the Beaufort Sea on Wednesday. A stronger low moves into the Chukchi
Sea on Saturday.

The main ice edge extends from near Shishmaref to 68 34N 168 2W to
68 25N 170 17W to 66 6N 169 28W and continues southward along
the Russian coast. There is also an area of brash sea ice remaining
to the northeast of Saint Lawrence Island.


From land-based points in Alaska, the main ice edge extends from
Shishmaref to 30 nm west of Point Hope to 75 nm west of Point Hope
to 25 nm northwest of Diomede and continues southward along the
Russian coast. The ice edge is open water. There is also an area of
brash sea ice remaining to the northeast of Saint Lawrence Island.

FORECAST FOR THE BEAUFORT SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Forecast
confidence is high. Westerly winds will persist through Friday.
Expect ice to drift eastward through Friday on the order of 5-10
nm/day. Easterly winds return on Saturday which will return east to
west movement of the ice pack. Near shore ice will continue to
degrade from the shore. Expect the melt area from the Mackenzie
River Delta to begin to make westward progress over the weekend.

FORECAST FOR THE CHUKCHI SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...Generally
southerly winds will hasten melt in the southern Chukchi Sea. A
strip of remaining pack ice will likely remain along the coast
between Cape Krusenstern and Point Hope. The ice edge will likely
move to the north 25 to 40 nm through the period.


-BERING SEA-

PKZ817-North side of Saint Lawrence Island out to 15 nm-

FORECAST FOR THE BERING SEA (DAYS 1 through 5)...An area of brash
ice remains northeast of Saint Lawrence Island, which will melt in
coming days. Otherwise, Alaska waters of the Bering Sea are ice
free.
