Bieda III, Ph.D., Chief Severe, Fire, Public, and Winter Weather Services Branch Subject: Updated: Soliciting Comments on the Experimental Graphical Hazardous Weather Outlook (GHWO) through February 28, 2025 Updated to solicit comments on recent changes to the GHWO product. The experimental Graphical Hazardous Weather Outlook (GHWO) has been updated with several changes to the user interface. The color scheme has been updated to show gray boxes instead of green for risk levels of None and to incorporate the Storm Prediction Center`s (SPC`s) Convective Outlook color scheme within the Tornado, Thunderstorm Wind, and Hail elements. In addition, a new location search box has been added to make navigating to the correct Weather Forecast Office`s (WFO`s) experimental GHWO easier. For areas of the country where multiple groups of weather hazards exist, like along coastal areas, there is a new Filter Element that only displays certain weather variables, like Marine. The experimental GWHO will be provided from 117 contiguous U.S. (CONUS) NWS WFOs for extended public comment through February 28, 2025. The experimental GHWO provides weather hazard risk forecast information through a web-based display on a public-facing webpage, generated by the WFOs. Specific weather hazard risks are placed in a matrix-style table with a daily clickable colored forecast button. Most weather risk elements are available up to 7 days into the future. Each colored forecast button in the matrix displays the highest forecast risk associated with that specific forecast element. The forecast element matrix displays daily hazard risk forecasts for each weather element. The matrix shows the highest risk level for each weather forecast element that is located across the County Warning Area (CWA) for the forecast day. Certain participating WFOs have customized forecast threats and elements available on their GHWO webpage, depending on their unique weather forecast service provision (e.g., marine/coastal forecast responsibility).
