Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Las Vegas NV
Issued by National Weather Service Reno NV
1258 AM PDT Wed Aug 14 2024

.SYNOPSIS...The region will be dry with temperatures running 2 to 5
degrees above normal through Friday. Shower and thunderstorm chances
return this weekend as monsoon moisture increases into southeast
Nevada, northwest Arizona and the eastern Mojave Desert of
California.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Through Friday night.

A series of perturbations passing by to our north through Thursday
will keep the subtropical ridge axis suppressed to our south. South
to southwest breezes will persist with gusts 20 to 30 mph at times.
On Friday, south to southeast flow on backside of high pressure
centered to our east will begin to open the door for monsoon
moisture and increasing storm chances this weekend.

.LONG TERM...Saturday through Tuesday.

Heading into the weekend, a trough of low pressure will approach the
West Coast, which will alter the synoptic pattern aloft. The Mojave
Desert will be sandwiched between the aforementioned trough and a
ridge of high pressure over the Central United States. This will
result in a south-southwesterly flow aloft, which will allow
monsoonal moisture to funnel up the Colorado River Valley into the
forecast area. As such, precipitation chances increase Saturday
afternoon and return each afternoon through Tuesday. Highest
precipitation chances will exist over northwestern Arizona and the
mountains of southeastern Nevada with uncertainty remaining for
areas west.

&&

.AVIATION...For Harry Reid...South-southwest components will persist
through this afternoon. Wind speeds through 19z will generally be
around 8-12 knots with isolated gusts to around 18 knots. Southwest
winds will increase to around 10-15 knots with gusts to around 20
knots after 19z. Skies will remain clear.

For the rest of southern Nevada, northwest Arizona and southeast
California...South-southwest winds 10-15 knots can be expected
across much of the region through this afternoon. Winds at KBIH will
be northwest at night and south during the day generally less than
10 knots. Mostly clear skies across the region.
