...EXCESSIVE HEAT WARNING NOW IN EFFECT UNTIL MIDNIGHT MDT FRIDAY
NIGHT...

* WHAT...Hot conditions with temperatures up to 110 expected for
  lower Washington County and Zion Canyon and other lower elevation
  areas in and near Zion National Park Sunday and Monday, increasing
  to dangerously hot temperatures of 115 degrees Tuesday through
  Friday. Hot conditions with temperatures 109 to 112 Sunday for
  lower elevation sections of Lake Powell including Wahweap and Big
  Water, 102 to 106 Monday, 105 to 110 Tuesday through Friday.
  Overnight recoveries will be poor with lows forecast in the mid to
  upper 70s to low 80s, limiting recovery for those without adequate
  cooling.

* WHERE...Glen Canyon Recreation Area/Lake Powell, Lower Washington
  County, and Zion National Park.

* WHEN...Until midnight MDT Friday Night.

* IMPACTS...Heat related illnesses increase significantly during
  extreme heat events.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...This is a long duration, dangerous heat wave.
  Temperatures over slickrock and red rock will be even hotter.
  Consider hiking early in the morning or late in the evening. Warm
  overnight temperatures can cause heat stress to build for those
  without adequate cooling access.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of
the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Do not leave young children and pets in unattended vehicles. Car
interiors will reach lethal temperatures in a matter of minutes.

Take extra precautions when outside. Wear lightweight and loose
fitting clothing. Try to limit strenuous activities to early morning
or evening. Take action when you see symptoms of heat exhaustion and
heat stroke.

To reduce risk during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and
Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in
shaded or air conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat
should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an
emergency! Call 9 1 1.
