A very hot and dry air mass will remain in place across the interior portions of the area through Saturday as a strong and dominant ridge of high pressure continues to assert itself over the region. Very hot temperatures and low humidities will continue across the interior valleys, mountains, and deserts with highs today between 100 and 112 degrees and minimum humidities between 5 and 15 percent. Temperatures are expected to be a few degrees cooler on Saturday with minimum humidities generally between 10 and 20 percent across the interior. The hottest and driest conditions are expected for the Antelope Valley through the period. While there is some marine layer influence near the coast today, the coastal valleys will remain very warm and dry. In addition, onshore wind gusts between 20 to 30 mph are expected each afternoon for the next few days, with gusty northwest winds each afternoon and evening across the Interstate 5 corridor. Local gusts to 35 mph will be possible. The hot temperatures, low humidities and gusty winds will bring elevated to brief critical fire weather conditions to much of the area away from the coast through Saturday. The hot conditions will bring a more unstable air mass to the region over the coming days. Conditions will be favorable for large vertical plume growth with any new or existing fires, especially in old fuel growth stands. Projected mixing heights between 10,000 and 20,000 feet will be common through Saturday and areas under a large plume dominated fire can expect to have gusty and erratic surface winds and the potential for extreme fire behavior should any ignition starts. Mid-level monsoonal moisture and instability will move into the area today through Saturday. The upper level flow pattern is expected to become more favorable for elevated convective storms across the mountains and deserts each afternoon through Saturday. For this afternoon, a 10-20 percent chance of elevated thunderstorms exists over the eastern San Gabriels and adjacent foothills of the Antelope Valley, as well as the Ventura county mountains, with a 5-10 percent chance over the Santa Barbara county mountains (including the Lake Fire). For Saturday, the mid level moisture and instability increase in areal coverage over the region, with a 10-20 percent chance of elevated thunderstorms across all the mountains, Antelope Valley, and interior portions of San Luis Obispo county. With the storms being high based and the lower levels remaining dry, the main threats with any storms will be isolated dry lightning strike and strong outflow winds( with localized gusts of 40 to 60 mph possible). With such long duration hot and dry conditions this past week, fuels will be more receptive to new fire starts if lightning develops, especially interior areas. If the expected coverage area of dry lightning becomes more widespread across the interior, a Fire Weather Watch may need to be considered for portions of our interior on Saturday.
