900 FXUS65 KLKN 071932 AFDLKN Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Elko NV 1232 PM PDT Sun Jul 7 2024 .SYNOPSIS... Near record heat is expected in Winnemucca and Tonopah both this afternoon and Monday afternoon. Near record heat is anticipated across all of Northern and Central Nevada Tuesday through Thursday. Triple digit heat is likely in Elko Tuesday afternoon for the first time this calendar year. Excessive heat should persist into Friday evening. && .SHORT TERM...Tonight through Monday night An area of high pressure will be centered over Southern California tonight and Monday. This area of high pressure will move eastward into Southern Nevada Monday night. An Excessive Heat Warning is in effect for Humboldt, Lander, Eureka, and Northern Nye Counties. Triple digit heat is likely in Winnemucca, Battle Mountain, and Tonopah Monday afternoon. There is a 35 percent probability of record heat in Winnemucca Monday afternoon. The current record for hottest temperature measured in Winnemucca on July 8th is 104 degrees, set in 2017. There is a 25 percent probability of record heat in Tonopah Monday afternoon. The current record for hottest temperature measured in Tonopah on July 8th is 102 degrees, initially established in 2017 and last observed in 2021. This type of heat will result in a major weather risk for heat-related illnesses, especially for those without effective cooling. Take precautions by staying out of the sun, limiting outdoor activities, and drinking plenty of water. This heat will spread eastward Tuesday as a ridge of high pressure builds over the Silver State. .LONG TERM...Tuesday through next Sunday A strong ridge of high pressure will continue to bring hot and dry weather for much of next week. Winds will generally be 10-15 mph each afternoon, with stronger winds at 15-20 mph possible by next Saturday. Afternoon highs will be in the upper 90s to low 100s across the area with lows in the 60s each night. Ensemble guidance indicate the strong high will shift east by next weekend in response to a closed low forming along the California coast. This pattern shift may advect some monsoonal moisture into portions of central and eastern NV, although there is low confidence in the timing and precipitation for these areas. && .AVIATION... VFR conditions expected for the next 24 hours at all terminals. Breezy NW winds with gusts of 15-25 kts will diminish this evening as light terrain-driven winds take hold tonight. Breezy NW winds of 5-10 kts are expected to affect most TAF sites Monday afternoon and evening, with gusts up to 20 kts at KELY. && .FIRE WEATHER... Elevated fire weather conditions are expected in Eastern Nevada this afternoon into this evening due to northwest wind gusts 25 to 30 mph and relative humidity values as low as 4 percent. Hot and dry, with less wind Monday through Friday. Monsoonal moisture may move northward into Central and Northern Nevada Saturday, resulting in a possibility of thunderstorms Saturday afternoon and Saturday evening. && .LKN Watches/Warnings/Advisories...
