A brief EF-1 tornado occurred this afternoon on the southside of Jacksonville near Beach Boulevard, west of the eastern beltway of I-295 and in the Holiday Hill area of Arlington. A severe storm developed as outflow from earlier thunderstorms interacted with the Atlantic sea breeze and St Johns River breeze in eastern Duval County. That interaction induced a brief and shallow mesocyclone, which contracted and produced a tornado that skipped across portions of the Southside area. .Southside Duval... Rating: EF1 Estimated Peak Wind: 100 mph Path Length /statute/: 1.41 miles Path Width /maximum/: 200 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: 06/28/2024 Start Time: 02:15 PM EDT Start Location: 3 W UNF / Duval County / FL Start Lat/Lon: 30.2866 / -81.5547 End Date: 06/28/2024 End Time: 02:25 PM EDT End Location: 3 SE Arlington / Duval County / FL End Lat/Lon: 30.2912 / -81.5766 Survey Summary: An initial and brief touchdown occurred south of Beach Boulevard where a parked vehicle on a car dealership lot was overturned and tossed onto Beach Blvd. From there, the tornado did not maintain contact with the ground; it skipped to the west northwest where the supporting circulation tightened near a residential neighborhood in the Holiday Hill area where significant damage occurred. Primary damage in this area included several trees snapped and downed powerlines in the area of Grove Park Boulevard and Catalina Road East. Secondary damage to a home occurred due to a large uprooted tree in the same area.
