Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Amarillo TX
552 PM CDT Sat Aug 17 2024

...New AVIATION...

.SHORT TERM...
(This evening through Sunday night)
Issued at 305 PM CDT Sat Aug 17 2024

High pressure will continue to build over the Panhandles for the
rest of the weekend. The high will continue to strengthen and
temperatures will remain on the hot side, with widespread 100`s
expected tomorrow. Overall chances for storms will be minimal.
Storms today have the best chance to be along and south of I-40
(~15%), with a very low chance (<5%) north of I-40. Tomorrow will be
similar but most areas should have almost no chance for storms as
the high will be very well centered over the Panhandles.

As far as heat highlights go for Sunday, areas we expect to reach or
exceed 105 will be the eastern Texas Panhandle as well as Armstrong,
Donley, and Collingsworth Counties, and The Palo Duro Canyon
national park.

.LONG TERM...
(Monday through next Friday)
Issued at 305 PM CDT Sat Aug 17 2024

Heat highlights will likely continue each day into the extended for
various portions of the Panhandles.

As we move into next week an upper level trough will move down over
the Great Lakes Region and will bring some cooler air to that area.
While our area will still be under the influence of the ridge and
have hot temperatures continue, the northern Panhandles may be
clipped by a subtle shortwave pulling slightly cooler air to the
area, and could result in some mid to upper 90s as a high. Meanwhile
the rest of the Panhandles will be 100+ on Monday.

Tuesday through Friday will be very similar with overall hot
temperatures, and a very low (<10%) chance of showers or storms.
But those chances could be bumped up a bit if the high shifts a
little to the east or west, providing us with a better moisture
source. But overall, tor the most part it looks like we will stay
under the high and those very low precipitation chances will
continue for the extended.
