119 WGAK87 PAJK 180336 FLSAJK Flood Advisory National Weather Service Juneau AK 736 PM AKDT Wed Jul 17 2024 .The back edge of the rain has pushed past the area. The heavy rain has caused rivers, especially the Taiya River to go above minor flood stage. Water levels are expected to be below flood stage by Thursday morning. AKZ318-181145- /O.CON.PAJK.FA.Y.0011.000000T0000Z-240718T1800Z/ /00000.N.ER.000000T0000Z.000000T0000Z.000000T0000Z.OO/ Municipality of Skagway AK- 736 PM AKDT Wed Jul 17 2024 ...FLOOD ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 10 AM AKDT THURSDAY... * WHAT...Small stream and river flooding caused by excessive rainfall continues. * WHERE...The Taiya River near areas along Low Lying portions of the Chilkoot Trail. * WHEN...Until 1000 AM AKDT Thursday. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. River or stream flows are elevated. Significant runoff may cause flooding of creeks and rivers. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 722 PM AKDT, Satellite estimates and rain gauge data indicate moderate to heavy rain has fallen across the advisory area. The rises will continue to cause minor flooding of rivers and small streams, especially near the Taiya River. Between 1 and 2 inches of rain in total have fallen over the basin. - For Taiya River near Skagway: At 7:00pm the stage was 16.1 feet. Flood Stage is 16.5 feet. Forecast: A crest around 16.9 feet is expected around 10:00pm Wednesday. Water levels will go below minor flood stage Thursday morning. Impacts: At 16.0 feet: Portions of the Chilkoot Trail begins to inundate with water. At 16.5 feet: Portions of the first few miles of the Chilkoot Trail will begin to inundate with water to ankle depth. At 17.0 feet: The National Park Service advises against boating and other recreational water-based activities on the Taiya River. Trail orientation and navigation begins to become difficult and may hinder route-finding for several hundred feet. Water will be knee deep or higher in places along the lower portions of the trail. At 17.5 feet: The National Park Service may close the Chilkoot Trail due to flooding impacts associated with high water along the lower portions of the trail. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS... Most flood deaths occur in vehicles.
