Flooding caused by snowmelt and rainfall is continuing. The water levels are progressively dropping, now, but the Chilkat River still remains above minor flood stage. AKZ319-181030- /O.CON.PAJK.FA.Y.0009.000000T0000Z-240720T0000Z/ /00000.N.RS.000000T0000Z.000000T0000Z.000000T0000Z.OO/ Haines Borough and Klukwan AK- 622 PM AKDT Wed Jul 17 2024 ...FLOOD ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM AKDT FRIDAY... * WHAT...Flooding caused by rain and snowmelt continues. * WHERE...The Chilkat River in areas around Mile Post 14 and 24 of the Haines Highway, near Klukwan, and the Chilkat River Bridge. * WHEN...Until 400 PM AKDT Friday. * IMPACTS...Minor flooding in low-lying and poor drainage areas. * ADDITIONAL DETAILS... - At 620 PM AKDT, satellite estimates and rain gauge data indicate the rain has ended, and snowmelt across the advisory area and minor flooding are still ongoing, especially near The Chilkat River. Between 1.75 and 2.25 inches of rain have fallen. - For Chilkat River at Klukwan: At 6:00pm the stage was 126.2 feet. Flood Stage is 126.0 feet. Forecast: A crest around 127.0 feet is expected late in the morning Thursday. Impacts: At 126.0 feet: Bankfull stage. Water will begin to flood backyards along the Chilkat River in the village of Klukwan. At 126.5 feet: Expect flooding of yards and bank erosion near the Jilkaat Kwan Cultural Heritage Center Campus Traditional Knowledge camp in the village of Klukwan. Water will flood lower elevations in backyards along the Chilkat River near Klukwan and start to impact some smokehouse and a river access road. At 127.5 feet: Lower elevations in backyards along the Chilkat River in Klukwan will be underwater, and a river access road, smokehouses and storage sheds will flood. Bank erosion is expected to increase near Jilkaat Kwan Cultural Heritage Center Campus Traditional Knowledge camp. PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...
