Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pocatello ID
215 AM MDT Sat Jul 6 2024

.SHORT TERM...Today through Sun night. Look for a stronger spike
upward in temperature this afternoon as the upper level ridge builds
for most of the day. At the very end of the afternoon, low pressure
moving through southern Canada will increase the wind and bring a
few clouds around 600mb/14000ft MSL during the early evening. This
wind will reach Red Flag/Fire Weather critical conditions and also
trigger the Lake Wind Advisory for the American Falls Reservoir, for
the afternoon and into the early evening. It should also trigger
some showers and thunderstorms in the Island Park-Macks Inn area for
the late afternoon. With the arrival of some cooler air on the west
side of the low as it moves eastward, Sun should be actually a
little cooler and more stable, even as clouds diminish during the
morning. Messick

.LONG TERM...Monday through Saturday.
The theme of the long term is hot and dry with mainly light winds.
By Wednesday many low elevation high temperatures will be around 100
degrees give or take a couple of degrees on either side of the
triple digit mark. Precipitation is not expected but there is a
very slight chance some monsoonal moisture could work north by next
Friday and Saturday but the model blend remains dry with most
convective activity to the north. The main impact is going to the
the extreme heat beginning Tuesday into next weekend and will likely
be issuing heat products in the future. GK

.AVIATION...
Will have clear skies through Sunday. Main impacts today will be
the wind increase after 18Z to 15 to 20 knot sustained winds at BYI,
PIH and IDA with gusts 25 to 30 knots and 10 to 15 knots sustained
winds at SUN and DIJ with gusts near 20 knots.

.FIRE WEATHER...Very dry conditions continue, with temperatures
spiking up 6 to 10 deg F from yesterday, and producing widespread
low humidity. Low pressure moving across southern Canada will
increase the wind, especially in the Twin Falls and Idaho Falls BLM
lands and the southern Sawtooth NF. It should be reaching Red Flag
Warning conditions in the Twin Falls BLM and southern Sawtooth NF
where fuel conditions are at or near critical stages.
Behind the low, more northerly and northwesterly wind should be
lighter and temperatures actually a little cooler despite fewer
clouds. Messick
