Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Missoula MT
243 AM MDT Sun Jul 14 2024

.DISCUSSION...The Northern Rockies will remain under westerly flow
aloft into Monday on the tail end of an upper level jet streak.
Hot and dry conditions will continue, along with increased
westerly winds this afternoon and again on Monday afternoon.
Meanwhile, a closed system of low pressure is spinning off the
coast of northern California. This system will send Pacific
moisture northeast. The result will be chances for showers and
thunderstorms in Lemhi County and southwest Montana this afternoon
and again on Monday afternoon. A dry, unstable lower atmosphere
will mean strong outflow winds of about 30-40 mph from any
thunderstorms that develop.

By Tuesday afternoon, the broad, flat ridge bringing westerly flow
will amplify, putting the Northern Rockies under a more well-
formed ridge once again. Daytime high temperatures will bounce
back up for the second half of this week. Temperatures for the
lower Salmon, Snake, and Clearwater River valleys will be back up
in the neighborhood of 110 degrees, while the Missoula/Bitterroot
Valleys, Lower Clark Fork, and Kootenai regions will see the
upper 90s and flirt with triple digits.

&&

.AVIATION...Pacific moisture entering the Northern Rockies
airspace this afternoon will bring about a 10-20 percent chance
for showers and thunderstorms to KSMN, KHRF, and KBTM after about
14/1900Z. Thunderstorms that develop will be capable of erratic
gusts of about 30-40 knots. All terminals will experience an
increase in westerly winds this afternoon to about 15-25 knots by
about 14/20000Z.
