Issued by NWS Los Angeles, CA
Issued by NWS Los Angeles, CA
567 FNUS56 KLOX 152116 FWFLOX Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 216 PM PDT Mon Jul 15 2024 ...POTENTIAL FOR LARGE PLUME-DOMINATED FIRES ACROSS INTERIOR DUE TO VERY HIGH MIXING HEIGHTS THROUGH AT LEAST WEDNESDAY... ...ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS TUESDAY THROUGH THURSDAY FOR THE MOUNTAINS NEAR THE I-5 CORRIDOR POSSIBLY EXTENDING INTO THE WESTERN SANTA YNEZ MOUNTAINS... .DISCUSSION... Isolated showers and thunderstorms are possible again this afternoon to early evening across the eastern San Gabriel mountains to eastern Antelope Valley and the northern Ventura mountains. Brief heavy rain, gusty winds up to 55 mph and frequent lightning are possible with these storms, with isolated fire starts possible should lighting strike outside of heavier rain. Warming and drying trends are expected Wednesday through Friday and possibly into the weekend as a ridge builds into the region from the east. Min humidity of 10-25 percent will become common for interior areas and 20-40 percent warmer coastal valleys and foothills during this time. This combined with peak wind gusts of 25 to locally 40 mph for southwest Santa Barbara County (Sundowners) and the mountains near the I-5 corridor into the western Antelope Valley through Thursday (except starting Tuesday I-5 corridor). Elevated fire weather conditions are possible during this time, especially for the mountains near the I-5 corridor, where confidence for drying trends is highest. Conditions will be favorable for large vertical plume growth with any new or existing fires, especially in old fuel growth stands. Mixing heights up to 15,000 feet will be common across the Antelope Valley through at least Wednesday and 10,000 to 13,000 feet elsewhere and areas under a large plume dominated fire can expect to have gusty and erratic surface winds and the potential for extreme fire behavior should any ignition starts. There is a 50-70 percent chance for a significant heat wave across interior areas (deserts, mountains and interior valleys) as early as Friday, which may last into next week. There is also a 10-20 percent chance of monsoonal thunderstorms for interior Los Angeles and Ventura Counties (5-10 percent chance elsewhere) this weekend.
