Issued by NWS Los Angeles, CA
219 FNUS56 KLOX 162052 FWFLOX Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 152 PM PDT Tue Jul 16 2024 ...ELEVATED FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS THROUGH THURSDAY FOR THE MOUNTAINS NEAR THE I-5 CORRIDOR TO WESTERN ANTELOPE VALLEY AND THE WESTERN SANTA YNEZ MOUNTAINS... ...POTENTIAL FOR LARGE PLUME-DOMINATED FIRES ACROSS INTERIOR THROUGH AT LEAST THIS WEEKEND... .DISCUSSION... Warming trends are expected Wednesday through Friday and possibly into the weekend as a ridge builds into the region from the east. Min humidity of 12-25 percent will continue for interior areas and 20-40 percent warmer coastal valleys and foothills during this time. This combined with peak wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph (local gusts to 50 mph southwest Santa Barbara County (Sundowners)) and the mountains near the I-5 corridor into the western Antelope Valley each afternoon to evening through Thursday. Elevated fire weather conditions are likely during this time, although likely relegated above roughly 1000-1500 feet elevation in the western Santa Ynez Range due to continued marine influence below that level. There is a 80 percent chance for a significant heat wave across interior areas (deserts, mountains and interior valleys) as early as Thursday, which may continue well into next week. There is also a 10-20 percent chance of monsoonal thunderstorms for interior Los Angeles and Ventura Counties (5-10 percent chance elsewhere) this weekend, potentially increasing in coverage into early next week. Localized flooding, fire starts due to lightning, and erratic winds will be possible with any thunderstorms. A monsoon push may spread heat impacts towards the coast and somewhat mitigate heat impacts, especially related to daytime highs, for the interior. Conditions will continue be favorable for large vertical plume growth with any new or existing fires, especially in old fuel growth stands. Mixing heights 10,000 to 15,000 feet will likely continue for interior areas through at least this weekend. Areas under a large plume dominated fire can expect to have gusty and erratic surface winds and the potential for extreme fire behavior should any ignition starts.
