A line of strong to severe thunderstorms raced across northern Illinois into northern Indiana during the late evening hours of July 15th into the early morning hours of the 16th. Reports of trees and power lines down have been received in multiple counties with details still being gathered across the area. An NWS storm survey has been performed on the south side of Elkhart west of US-33, between Lusher and Hively Avenues where several trees were either snapped or uprooted. It has been confirmed that a brief tornado occurred in this general area with wind speeds of at least 85 mph, consistent with a high end EF0. Additional details will be released later today once the survey team returns and the data assessment is completed. && EF Scale: The Enhanced Fujita Scale classifies tornadoes into the following categories: EF0.....65 to 85 mph EF1.....86 to 110 mph EF2.....111 to 135 mph EF3.....136 to 165 mph EF4.....166 to 200 mph EF5.....>200 mph NOTE: The information in this statement is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event and publication in NWS Storm Data. $$ Fisher
