...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1943, on a whim, and flying a single engine plane,
Lieutenant Ralph O`Hare and Colonel Duckworth were the
first to fly into a hurricane. It started regular Air
Force reconnaissance flights into hurricanes.
Incidentally, Ralph O`Hare is not the namesake for O`Hare
International Airport, which, in 1949, was named in honor
of Edward O`Hare, the Navy`s first Flying Ace and Medal
of Honor Recipient in World War Two. In 1926, a
hurricane came inland near Daytona Beach Florida, causing
$2.5 million damage in Eastern Florida. When adjusted
for inflation, that amounts to approximately $39.7
million. One city that was hit hard was Jacksonville.
