...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1986, extremely powerful severe thunderstorms
barreled through Kansas and Southwest Missouri with hail
that reached three to three and a half inches in diameter
and 70 to 90 mph winds. The three and a half inch
diameter hail clobbered parts of Coffey County where 18
people were injured while 3 inch diameter hail hammered
Barber and Kiowa counties. Winds around 90 mph tore
through Lyon County near Emporia and a 60 mph gust
injured one in Morris County. The severe thunderstorms
caused around $71 million damage.

In 1980, the hottest month on record finally ended at
Dallas Fort Worth Airport. The average monthly
temperature in July 1980 at DFW Airport was a nasty 92.0
degrees. There were 2 dates, the 2nd and the 18th, on
which the AVERAGE temperature was 95.5 degrees. Highs
each day ranged from 101 to 110. In 1983, it was,
historically speaking, a very close call when a severe
thunderstorm microburst produced a phenomenal 150-mph
gust at Andrews Air Force Base. It heavily damaged 2
buildings and 3 airplanes. It occurred just 6 minutes
after president Ronald Reagan landed aboard Air Force
One. In 1985, a nearly stationary severe thunderstorm
deluged Cheyenne Wyoming with around 6 inches of rain in
6 hours to produce the worst flash flood on record for
the state. Hail accumulated to between 2 and 5 feet
deep. The event killed 12 and caused around $65 million
damage.
