...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1987, extremely powerful severe thunderstorms invaded
much of the eastern half of South Dakota with hail as
large as softballs, winds that reached around 90 mph, and
6 small tornadoes.  The softball sized hail bombed
Bowdle, located in North-Central South Dakota, while
areas just south of Watertown were whip lashed by 92 mph
winds.Of the 6 tornadoes, 5 occurred in Lyman County of
Central South Dakota.  The amount of damage caused is
unknown.

In 1843, an incredible cloudburst near Philadelphia
turned creeks and streams entering the Delaware River
into raging torrents.  There were around 16 inches in 3
hours.The resulting flash flooding destroyed 32 bridges
and caused 19 deaths.  It is believed that a few small
tornadoes occurred as well.
