...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1961, a vicious complex of severe thunderstorms went
on a rampage in a northwest to southeast manner across
Kansas. Starting in Southwest Nebraska early in the
afternoon, the complex ran roughshod through Hill City,
Great Bend, Wichita and Parsons. Most of these areas
were pummeled with baseball to softball sized hail and
winds that, in a few cases, roared from an incredible 80
TO 120 MPH. Houses were unroofed, windows were smashed,
trees uprooted, power poles leveled and crops destroyed.
Considering the magnitude of the event, it is amazing
that only one person was killed and two were injured.
However, many farm animals were lost in the disaster.
The dollar amount of the damage is unknown.
