...ON THIS DATE IN WEATHER HISTORY...

In 1951, the Kansas River Valley Flood reached a plateau
when the Kansas, Neosho, Verdigris and Marais Des Cygnes
Rivers inundated most of Northeast and East Central
Kansas.  Primed by record-setting rainfalls that swamped
most of these areas in May and June, the flooding was
escalated by astonishing 8 to 16 inch rainfalls that
inundated many areas from July 9th to the 12th.  The
Kansas River crested 4 to 6 FEET ABOVE ALL RECORDS from
Manhattan to Bonner Springs and crests on the Marais Des
Cygnes, Verdigris and Neosho Rivers crested some 9 FEET
ABOVE ALL OF THEIR RESPECTIVE RECORDS.In all, 28 died
in the worst flood on record for the Kansas River and its
tributaries that caused around $1 billion damage.

In 2012, Death Valley California had a "low" temperature
of 107 degrees.  This tied the world record for warmest
low temperature.  With a high of 128 degrees, the average
temperature for the date was 117.5 degrees, which is the
world record for the hottest calendar day average
temperature.
