In coordination with the York County Office of Emergency Management, the National Weather Service in State College has confirmed that a series of downbursts occurred on the northeast side of York during the evening of July 16, 2024. Maximum estimated wind speeds were between 80 and 90 mph. .NE York Downbursts... Peak Wind /Estimated : 80-90 mph Path Length /statute/: 6 miles Path Width /maximum/: 2 miles Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: July 16, 2024 Start Time: 6:57 PM EDT Start Location: Central York High School Start Lat/Lon: 40.01454 / -76.70076 End Date: July 16, 2024 End Time: 7:14 PM EDT End Location: 1 SE Hallam End Lat/Lon: 39.99166 / -76.58618 A line of thunderstorms developed and moved across north to northeast portions of York County. These storms intensified as they moved south, producing the first downburst of severe wind at Central York High School. Damage on the school grounds occurred to trees, roofs, and several athletics facilities including one of the football goal posts being turned 45 to 90 degrees. The line of storms and subsequent downbursts continued moving southeast, producing additional downbursts. Damage was sustained across a large portion of Springettsbury and Hellam Townships, extending south of U.S. Highway 30 between Hallam and East Prospect. Numerous large trees were uprooted and blown down along with power lines downed, resulting in several instances of structural damage. The line of storms continued moving southeast and gradually weakening as they approached southeastern portions of the county. && NOTE: The information in this statement is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event and publication in NWS Storm Data. $$
