356 FXUS65 KBYZ 160912 AFDBYZ Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Billings MT 312 AM MDT Tue Jul 16 2024 .DISCUSSION... Through Wednesday night... High pressure will be to the east of us bringing cold air advection through the day. Today will be the coolest day that most of the region has seen in a while and also the coolest day going forward. There will be a large temperature range today with low 80s possible for locations such as Baker that are closer to the high pressure. Temperatures will increase as you head west with most locations in the low 90s. Tomorrow will feature rising heights and temperatures with high 80s to mid 90s across the area. A persistent easterly component to the wind will keep dewpoints near 50 and MinRH values in the 20s for most. With ongoing wildfires across the west there is the potential for haze, mostly for Sheridan County due to a northerly wind pushing any smoke south. The short term looks to remain dry. Torgerson Thursday through Monday... Models remain consistent that a strong ridge will dominate the weather pattern for the extended period. Highs will generally be in the lower to mid 90s. The hottest day may be Thursday when Billings has a 39% chance of reaching 100 degrees with the river valleys showing a 30-50% chance (these numbers have trended down a bit since yesterday). Models do show a short wave rounding the ridge late Thursday into Thursday night bringing isolated to widely scattered showers/thunderstorms to our eastern plains. Otherwise, expect some monsoonal moisture under the ridge to produce isolated/scattered showers/thundershowers over the western mountains with little chance of measurable rainfall elsewhere. Despite the above normal temperatures and mainly dry conditions...wind fields do not look to strong so critical fire weather concerns may be limited...but we will be monitoring closely. BT && .AVIATION... VFR conditions will prevail over the next 24 hours. There may be slantwise visibility reductions due to smoke for KBIL, KLVM, and KSHR with the greatest threat being for KSHR. The next 24 hours will remain dry. Torgerson && .PRELIMINARY POINT TEMP/POPS...
