Peak Wind Estimated: 80 mph Path Length /statute/: 3.0 miles Path Width /maximum/: 4000 yards Fatalities: 0 Injuries: 0 Start Date: July 16, 2024 Start Time: 2:01 PM ET Start Location: Town of Hounsfield, Village of Sackets Harbor, Jefferson County, NY Start Lat/Lon: 43.9481 / -76.1294 End Date: July 16, 2024 End Time: 2:07 PM ET End Location: Town of Hounsfield, Jefferson County, NY End Lat/Lon: 43.9761 / -76.0829 A National Weather Service Storm Survey Team toured damage that began near the Sackets Harbor Battlefield in the Village of Sackets Harbor and continued east-northeast through the village and into the Town of Hounsfield. Damage was primarily to very large but often partially rotten hard and softwood trees through the village. Many of these were snapped, however due to the degree of rotting in all the trunks of trees noted by the survey team, the estimated wind speed was reduced summarily from what would otherwise be suggested. Sporadic tree damage extended from the central portion of the village out Military Road and Storrs Road with a couple of locations were large tree limbs came down and damaged some structures. Additionally, on the north side of the Black River Bay, the survey team toured damage primarily along South Shore Road in Pillar Point and the Town of Brownville. Damage here was again rather scattered, however some damage to shingles, siding, and fascia of a few homes along with scattered tree damage suggest a bit stronger maximum wind speeds than in Sackets Harbor itself. All damage toured suggested straight line winds were responsible for the damage with no indications of a coherent tornadic path nor convergent tornadic damage. The National Weather Service extends its thanks to the Jefferson County Office of Fire and Emergency for its assistance with today`s survey. && NOTE: The information in this statement is preliminary and subject to change pending final review of the event and publication in NWS Storm Data. $$ Fries
