Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Pago Pago AS
158 PM SST Fri Jul 5 2024

.Short term...
The high pressure system that dominated weather patterns early
this week will continue to migrate east through tonight. This will
allow for a trough to the south to move over the territory on
Saturday. Expect scattered showers and east winds of 10 to 15 mph
through tonight, becoming numerous with a gentle breeze Saturday
due to the trough. Embedded thunderstorms are also possible as an
uptick in moisture and instability is seen on Saturday via latest
Galvez-Davidson Index (GDI) model data.

.Long term...
By Sunday, another ridge will build to the south. This feature
will return a round of trade winds and passing showers through
midweek. However, an uptick in rainfall is also forecasted as a
mid-level trough increases moisture in the area Thursday through
Friday. Inclement weather (windy and rainy conditions) may occur
for this duration as the trough and ridge creates tight pressure
gradients over the territory.

.Marine...
The latest information from the PacIOOS buoy to the east of Aunu`u
still shows elevated seas around 9 feet. Models remain consistent
in seas subsiding through the day as winds continues to diminish
in the area. Expect wave heights to briefly fall below advisory
thresholds Saturday. However, thunderstorms embedded within the
trough could elevate seas at times.

The latter ridge will enhance waves again on Sunday as winds
may reach up to 25 mph with higher gusts by midweek. Hazardous
seas are expected at this time through the end of the forecast
period. Furthermore, a large swell from the south may elevate
surfs to near warning-levels on Tuesday.
