Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California
National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA
934 AM PDT Wed Jul 17 2024

...SEVERAL DAYS OF VERY HOT AND MODERATELY DRY CONDITIONS OVER VALLEYS
AND MOUNTAINS FRIDAY THROUGH MUCH OF NEXT WEEK WITH GROWING POTENTIAL
FOR PLUME DOMINATED FIRE BEHAVIOR...

...GUSTY NORTH WINDS OVER SANTA BARBARA COUNTY AND THE I-5 CORRIDOR
THROUGH SATURDAY NIGHT, AND GUSTY ONSHORE WINDS OVER INTERIOR AREAS
EARLY NEXT WEEK...

...LOW BUT PRESENT THREAT OF DRY LIGHTNING THURSDAY THROUGH THE
WEEKEND...

.DISCUSSION...
Little change expected through Thursday, with above normal temperatures
and dry interior areas. High pressure aloft will strengthen on Friday
and persist through most of next week. Saturday looks the hottest and
driest, with highs temperatures between 100 and 110 common over the
valleys and warmer mountains and humidities down into the 8 to 15
percent range. While temperatures will lower some over the coastal
valleys next week, mountains and interior valleys will change little
and remain hot and dry. This will result in an extended period of high
mixing heights (10,000 to 15,000 feet) and risk for plume dominated fire
behavior. The greatest source of uncertainty for this general weather
scenario is the steady influx of mid-level monsoonal moisture. This
could bring a random day or two of less hot and dry conditions, as well
as a low but present threat for thunderstorms and dry lightning. At
this point, the threat is the highest Thursday through Sunday morning
and highest closer to Los Angeles County.

North wind gusts of 25 to 45 mph will be common through Saturday Night
over the wind-prone areas of Santa Barbara County and the I-5 Corridor,
including portions of the Lake Fire. Southwest winds will increase over
the mountains and interior as early as Saturday afternoon, but
especially the first half of next week, with gusts of 25 to 40 mph
common. This period in particular is the greatest concern for rapid
grass fire growth with continued hot and dry conditions on top of the
increasing winds.
