.DISCUSSION...
Issued at 320 PM CDT Sun Jul 7 2024

An upper trough extending west to east from the Bighorns to New
England, will continue to move to the east this afternoon into
tonight. Temperatures have been on the cool side today with most
areas ranging from the mid-60s to mid-70s. Showers are ongoing
across portions of north central Kansas at this hour, and a few
strong thunderstorms are located to the north of the Hastings CWA. A
few models are showing the possibility of some thunderstorms moving
into our area from the north later this afternoon. A few of these
may become strong, with some gusty winds and small hail possible.
Storms are expected to move out of the area by midnight. Overnight,
a few models try to bring some patchy fog into the area. Downslope
winds are expected to be fairly light, and decreasing clouds are
expected. Can`t entirely rule out a little patchy fog in low lying
areas, but at this time, don`t anticipate this to be a widespread
issue.

Heading into Monday, the upper trough remains over the Central High
Plains, while an upper ridge moves over the PACNW. Southwest flow
will be in place over the area and warmer air is expected to move
in. Expected highs will be in the low to mid-80s.

Expect a change in the pattern as the ridge shifts east, putting us
under northwest flow Tuesday through the end of the work week.
Temperatures will start a gradual warming trend through the week,
with 80s expected Tuesday, mid-80s to low 90s by Thursday, and 90s
by Friday.

Saturday and Sunday bear watching as the ridge lifts to the north,
with high pressure located over the Desert Southwest and the
Rockies. Temperatures are currently forecasted to reach t he mid to
upper 90s in south central Nebraska, and the upper 90s to around 102
degrees for areas along and south of the Kansas-Nebraska border.
Heat index values will climb to around the 100-103 range for areas
along and south of the Kansas-Nebraska border. Heat advisory
criteria is 105 for heat index values, so this is something to
continue to monitor over the coming days.

With the shift in the pattern, we are expecting dry conditions from
Monday morning through the end of the extended forecast.
