Issued by NWS Los Angeles, CA
814 FNUS56 KLOX 062237 FWFLOX Fire Weather Planning Forecast For Southwestern California National Weather Service Los Angeles/Oxnard CA 337 PM PDT Sat Jul 6 2024 ...RED FLAG WARNING IN EFFECT UNTIL 6 AM MONDAY FOR THE INTERSTATE 5 CORRIDOR AND WESTERN ANTELOPE VALLEY FOOTHILLS DUE TO GUSTY SOUTHWEST TO NORTHWEST WINDS, HOT TEMPERATURES, AND LOW HUMIDITIES... ...WIDESPREAD ELEVATED TO BRIEF CRITICAL FIRE WEATHER CONDITIONS WITH LARGE PLUME POTENTIAL ACROSS INTERIOR VALLEYS MOUNTAINS AND DESERTS THROUGH MUCH OF NEXT WEEK... .DISCUSSION... Long lasting and extremely hot conditions Will continue through much of next week. For today, very hot temperatures and low humidities have developed across the interior valleys, mountains, and deserts with highs between 100 and 115 degrees. Overnight lows will remain very warm in these areas, with some readings in the mid 70s to near 90 in warmest locations. A light north to northeast wind influence this morning and early afternoon brought very low humidities of 5 to 10 percent across the interior. A pronounced onshore wind shift from the the south and southwest will spread inland through this afternoon and evening, except northwest near the I-5 corridor. For the coast and coastal valleys, increasing onshore flow and marine layer influence have brought cooling and humidity improvement to the coast and coastal valleys today. With stronger onshore flow and a continued marine layer influence, the cooling trend will continue for coasts and valleys on Sunday, with little change into Monday. However, very hot conditions will change little over the mountains, interior valleys, and deserts through most if not all of next week. The increasing onshore flow will bring increasing southwest to northwest winds tonight through Sunday night, with little change into Monday. The interior areas could see widespread wind gusts of 25 to 40 mph during this time. The best overlap of gusty winds and low humidities will likely occur in the Interstate 5 corridor and western Antelope Valley foothills, resulting in the Red Flag Warning for those areas through Sunday night. While other interior areas are not in a Red Flag Warning, it is important to note that elevated to brief critical fire weather conditions will likely exist through much of next week, with the potential for additional large fires. The extreme heat will generate very deep mixing heights of 10000 to 18000 feet today through much of next week across the interior, increasing the potential for large plume dominated fires, especially in the mountains and foothills. This is one of the longest and most extreme heat waves on record for interior areas. For the foreseeable future, there will be a higher risk for large fires and plume dominated fires across the interior. There is a high risk for heat related illness as well.
