Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
1225 AM PDT Tue Jul 2 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
High temperatures this afternoon will be near seasonal values. A
warming trend is expected Wednesday through Sunday. By Sunday
afternoon, maximum temperatures will be around ten degrees above
normal for this time of year. Triple digit heat is possible in
Elko Sunday afternoon for this first time this calendar year. Dry
weather will prevail for at least the next seven days.

&&

.SHORT TERM...Today through Wednesday night
Broad cyclone flow aloft will prevail today and tonight. An
Eastern Pacific ridge of high pressure will build eastward across
Southern Nevada Wednesday and Wednesday night. Light and variable
winds Wednesday morning will become west to northwest by
afternoon. West to northwest wind gusts 25 to 30 mph are expected
Wednesday afternoon, with the highest gusts anticipated in Elko
County. High temperatures this afternoon will be near normal for
this time of year. A warming trend will start Wednesday.

.LONG TERM...Thursday through next Tuesday
A large dome of persistent high pressure will settle in on
Thursday setting up the weather pattern for the remainder of the
forecast period. Ensemble guidance meanders the high pressure
center over coastal California promoting northwest flow over the
Silver State.

Hot and dry conditions will build into the region by Thursday as
daytime highs will gradually increase through the weekend across
the CWA. Warmer than normal daytime highs will create elevated
heat risk for the region beginning Saturday and continuing through
the weekend. Time outside should be limited during the afternoon
hours as temperatures in some locations will reach into the 100s.
Steps should be taken to stay hydrated and check on those
susceptible to heat related health issues.

Model solutions diverge beginning early next week as some members
slide the high pressure center and associated ridge further north
up the west coast while other members begin to push the ridge
eastward into the Four Corners region by Tuesday.

.AVIATION...

the region today.

&&

fire weather conditions are expected in parts of Northern and
Central Nevada Wednesday afternoon into Wednesday evening due to
minimum relative humidity values as low as 5 percent and west to
northwest wind gusts 25 to 30 mph.
