Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Elko NV
222 PM PDT Tue Jul 2 2024

.SYNOPSIS...
Warming temperatures with continued dry weather through the
Independence Day holiday with more significant heat building
across the Great Basin into this weekend as a strong ridge nudges
eastward out of California. By Sunday afternoon, maximum
temperatures will be around ten degrees above normal for this time
of year. Triple digit heat is possible in Elko Sunday afternoon
for this first time this calendar year.

.SHORT TERM...Rest of this afternoon through Wednesday night.

Fairly benign conditions across northeastern and central Nevada
this afternoon with visible satellite completely devoid of any
cloud cover thanks to a vertically stacked ridge of high pressure
building eastward from California. Current temperatures so far
this afternoon are in the mid to upper 80s, with forecast highs
expected to add on another few degrees through the balance of the
afternoon.

Winds turn light and variable tonight with lows in the mid to
upper 50s, though cooler in northern Elko County with mid to upper
40s.

Wednesday, west-northwest winds increase through the afternoon
and evening, with a 60% chance for wind gusts of at least 30 mph
or greater. This will help lead to elevated fire weather concerns
across northern Nevada (see fire weather section below). Highs
very similar to today in the upper 80s to 90s in the lower valleys
across central portions of the state.

LONG TERM...4th Of July through next Tuesday.

An offshore dome of high pressure slowly progresses east from the
waters near California. With heights near 600 deca-meters, this
strong high pressure raise concerns of a prolonged heatwave across
the west coast and portions of the Great Basin. High temperatures
will be above average in the upper 90s to low 100`s Friday
through at least Tuesday. Messaging of the dangers of heat
exposure continue to ramp up, especially around the holiday and
following weekend. Luckily nighttime lows do recover and drop into
the 50s and 60s at night, however heat sensitive folks will be a
risk of heat related illnesses during the daytime hours, if
exposed for prolonged periods of time.

hours across much of the region with mostly clear skies. Winds
from the north-northwest this afternoon at WMC, ELY, TPH, and BAM,

at WMC, ELY, and BAM (15% chance). Winds turn light and variable
tonight before favoring similar directions again Wednesday
afternoon and evening

&&
