470 FXUS62 KKEY 090907 AFDKEY Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Key West FL 507 AM EDT Wed Jul 9 2025 ...New DISCUSSION, MARINE, AVIATION... .DISCUSSION... Issued at 505 AM EDT Wed Jul 9 2025 Scattered showers with isolated thunderstorms have dwindled into the morning hours as only a few light showers are currently being detected by KBYX radar. Nighttime Microphysics reveals partly cloudy skies outside of convection with less coverage on land. Temperatures across the island chain are in the lower 80s. Along the Reef, winds are northeasterly at near 10 knots. Today, gentle to moderate breezes will slacken slightly and become more gentle while gradually veering to the east then east to southeast by tonight. Shower activity will be possible through today and tonight as moisture comes in off an easterly wave approaching the Keys. This is verified by MIMIC Precipitable Water showing an increase in moisture pushing into our area. Higher rain chances are expected for Thursday and Thursday night as the area remains under the influence of a warm, moist tropical airmass provided from the east to southeasterly winds and the easterly wave enters our waters. At the end of the week into the weekend, a surface high in the Atlantic will strengthen resulting in a tightening of the pressure gradient and breezes becoming moderate. This increase in breezes will be brief as they once again slacken at the beginning of the weekend. For the weekend, a typical summer pattern is expected with a chance of showers and a slight chance of thunderstorms. && .MARINE... Issued at 505 AM EDT Wed Jul 9 2025 No watches, warnings, or advisories are currently in effect in the Florida Keys waters. From synopsis, an Atlantic High will maintain gentle to moderate breezes across the Florida Keys through today. An easterly wave will approach the Keys today and in conjunction with veering winds, elevate shower coverage from this evening through the end of the week. && .AVIATION... (06Z TAFS) Issued at 505 AM EDT Wed Jul 9 2025 VFR conditions are expected to prevail at the terminals through the TAF period. Shower and thunderstorm chances are expected to increase during the afternoon and evening, but for now the timing and coverage of any activity that may impact the terminals is too uncertain for TAF inclusion, so amendments and later routine TAFs will cover activity that does occur. East winds at 5 to 10 knots will persist. Higher gusts are possible with passing showers. && .CLIMATE... On this day in 2005, Hurricane Dennis hammered the Keys. It produced a cool high temperature of 82F and 4.25" of rain at Key West International Airport on the 9th, both daily records. This is the only hurricane to directly affect the Keys during the month of July in the last hundred years. && .KEY WATCHES/WARNINGS/ADVISORIES... FL...None.
