Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Boise ID
320 AM MDT Fri Jul 5 2024

.SHORT TERM...Today through Sunday night...An anomalously strong
upper high pressure ridge remains near the west coast through
the weekend with a dry northwest flow residing over SE Oregon
and SW Idaho. A couple of weak upper troughs moving through the
northern Rockies will enhance the winds across south-central
Idaho, especially Saturday afternoon with gusts to around 30
mph. Moisture associated with both of these troughs will track
to far to the east for any showers in our area. Temperatures
are expected to be hottest compared to normal across SE Oregon
due to the closer proximity to the ridge with highs in the 90s
to around 100 degrees. An Excessive Heat Watch remains in effect
for SE Oregon and far SW Idaho this weekend.

.LONG TERM...Monday through Friday...The heat expands further
eastward and northward with the building ridge to our west as it
moves closer each day through midweek. Widespread hot temperatures
well above 100 degrees are forecast for the lower valleys by
Tuesday, and above 105 degrees Wednesday and Thursday. Many
locations are likely to receive record or near record highs. An
Excessive Heat Watch is in effect for all of SE Oregon and SW
Idaho, including the mountain valleys where highs are forecast
to be well into the 90s. The heat wave will likely continue
through the end of the week, although limited monsoon moisture
arriving from the south could bring some clouds to alleviate the
hottest temps. Dry conditions prevail through the week, although
any increase in monsoon moisture would result in at least a
slight chance (<25 percent) of showers/thunderstorms toward the
latter half of the week.
