996 FXUS66 KPDT 280515 AFDPDT Area Forecast Discussion National Weather Service Pendleton OR 1015 PM PDT Thu Jun 27 2024 Updated aviation discussion .SHORT TERM...Today through Saturday...Latest water vapor imagery shows broad troughing encompassing much of the PacNW. As a result, winds have been breezy across the forecast area, peaking at around 35 mph through the Basin and Gorge, with amounts closer to 40 mph in the Kittitas Valley. Despite lift under the trough axis, the airmass overhead is relatively cool and dry, thus limiting shower activity to the Washington Cascade crests. Even then, shower activity is beginning to wind down as we head into the early evening hours as the center of the trough enters western Montana. Transitory ridging will then move in for Friday and Saturday, leaving us with benign weather and a brief warming trend before another trough arrives on Sunday. Winds will be light and out of the east Friday, shifting more westerly on Saturday as the aforementioned Sunday trough begins to gain more influence over the PacNW. Highs will climb into the upper 80s across the lower Basin by Saturday, with 70s and 80s elsewhere. Evans/74 .LONG TERM...Sunday through Thursday...Seasonable temperatures and gusty winds will be the highlight for Sunday through Monday with an upper trough across the PacNW. Low confidence (<20%) on isolated showers impacting the crests of the WA/OR Cascades and Wallowa County due to limited moisture from the dry trough. Temperatures will cool by a few degrees with the trough passing Sunday through Monday. Tuesday onward, temperatures will then warm a few degrees above normal again with the arrival of a ridge across the forecast area. Late Sunday afternoon through Monday night will have gusty winds at 25-35 mph around the Columbia Basin, Columbia River Gorge, Kittitas and Yakima valleys. This is because of the tightened surface pressure gradient along the Cascades from the trough. Probability is low to moderate (30-50%) for wind gusts exceeding 40-45 mph. Tuesday through Thursday, winds will settle down with the upper ridge building over the forecast area. Breezy conditions will continue across the forecast area with wind gusts at around 15-25 mph (<50% confidence). Feaster/97 && .AVIATION...06Z TAFS...All sites in VFR during this period with clear skies overnight then onset of some then high clouds Friday.
