.DISCUSSION...
The ridge aloft is slowly breaking down, with temps over the S
Interior today 4 to 8 degrees cooler and minimum RHs 5 to 9 %
higher. Southwest winds are 5 to 10 mph by the afternoon, with
gusts to 15 mph over the higher terrain N of Fairbanks.
Isolated showers will turn to scattered afternoon showers with
isolated to widely scattered late afternoon and evening wet
thunderstorms, favoring the White Mtns north and east. Some storms
may go into the overnight as a weak northwest flow develops this
evening.
Tuesday, southwest winds are on the increase to 10 to 15 mph with
15 to 25 mph over the N Interior and Yukon Flats, gusting to near 35
mph. High temps will be in the mid to upper 70s and minimum RHs
slightly lower Tue, with widespread 30 % RHs, and some upper 20
% in the Yukon Flats. Critical fire weather conditions will be
fairly widespread, and we have now issued a red flag warning for the
N Interior zones. It is also worth noting winds will not diminish
a lot over the N Interior Tue night.
On Wednesday, a stronger front is bringing southwest winds up
to 13 to 19 mph, with 15 to 25 mph gusting to 35 mph over the Yukon
Flats and N Interior. Even with temps around 70 and minimum RH around
the upper 30 % to low 40 % range, critical fire weather conditions
will undoubtedly be in place given the strong winds. The limiting
factor will be increasing clouds and light rain developing in
the afternoon, although the Yukon FLats will likely remain dry.
Wetting rains remain low through Wednesday night then increase
quite a bit Thursday evening as the main slug of moisture moves
inland.
