Severe thunderstorms and heavy rainfall will affect the eastern portions of the country today. Across the Pacific Northwest and northern Plains, showers with the chance for severe thunderstorms later today. For the Southwest and southern portions of Alaska, fire weather concerns expected today and could extend into the holiday weekend. Rip currents are possible for the east coast and Puerto Rico.

.Synopsis for the far southern California coast...
At 2 AM, a 1008 mb low was over Needles and a 1017 mb high was
550 miles southwest of San Diego. Weak to locally moderate onshore
flow will continue today as a troughing pattern sets up across
the region. Onshore flow will strengthen further into this
weekend. Strongest winds will be Sunday afternoon. Peak wind gusts
will be near 25 knots at times in the outer waters along with
combined seas of 8 to 11 feet. Calmer conditions are expected by
the middle of next week.
