Atmospheric River Bringing Heavy Rain to Southern California and Heavy Snow to the Sierra Nevadas

A strong atmospheric river will continue heavy rain over southern California through Friday. The heaviest rainfall is ongoing today in the Los Angeles Basin. Flash and urban flooding is possible. A prolonged heavy snowfall has begun over the Sierra Nevada Mountains and will continue through Friday. Travel will become increasingly difficult over the passes due to snow and strong winds. Today: East wind 15 to 20 knots with gusts to around 25 knots becoming east 15 to 20 knots with gusts to around 30 knots late in the afternoon. Chance of flurries late in the morning. Slight chance of snow and light freezing drizzle early in the afternoon, then chance of snow late in the afternoon. Waves 1 to 3 feet building to 4 to 7 feet in the late morning and afternoon. Waves occasionally to 9 feet.

Tonight: Southeast wind 15 to 20 knots with gusts to around 30 knots becoming south 5 to 10 knots early in the morning. Patchy fog through the night. Slight chance of light sleet in the evening. Snow and slight chance of light freezing rain through the night. Light sleet after midnight. Waves 4 to 7 feet subsiding to 3 to 5 feet early in the morning. Waves occasionally to 9 feet.

Friday: South wind 5 to 10 knots becoming west in the late morning and afternoon. Patchy fog in the morning. Chance of light freezing drizzle, drizzle, snow and light sleet in the morning. Waves 2 to 4 feet subsiding to 1 to 2 feet in the late morning and afternoon.

Friday Night: West wind 5 knots becoming south after midnight. Mostly cloudy. Waves 1 foot or less.
